Michigan Stadium was renovated in 1956 to increase seating capacity. At that time, sports director and former football coach Fritz Crisler said he was sitting in an additional place that only he knew about the location. Seats have been added on the east and west sides of the stadium. The west side has more than 650 chair seats and 46 suites, which are divided into the first two levels. On the east side there are around 1,900 outdoor club seats, 250 covered club seats and 850 covered club seats with stadium lounges on the first and second levels of the structure. A $ 226 million renovation project in 2009 not only made Michigan Stadium the country’s largest college football venue, but also improved the fan experience.
In August 2007, The Chiefs unveiled a massive renovation plan, keeping the Arrowhead Stadium at the level of the latest NFL stadiums. This project also included the construction of the Horizon Level on the upper deck on the south side of the stadium, which included a new press box, luxury suites and premium seats. The Chief Hall of Honor’s 28,000 square meter hall of honor is located in the lobby on the lower level and shows great teams and players as well as artifacts from the history of the chiefs. The new HD panels / videos replaced the existing markings on the stands in both end zones.
The famous blue plains of Michigan Stadium and Yellow M Block were completed before the 1965 season. Before the 1969 season, the grassland was replaced by tartan, a kind of astroturf. For the 1973 season, the box seats in the first three rows of the stadium were removed and replaced by lead seats, which slightly increased the capacity. Before the start of the 1991 season, the Michigan Stadium field was reduced by installing natural turf and two new rows of seats were installed, increasing the seating capacity to 102,501. Additional renovations were completed in 1997 when seats were added along with new video / scoreboards. In 1998, 5,000 seats were added, which corresponds to a capacity of 107,501.
In their normal environment, all 30 league stadiums have a seating capacity of at least 60,000 spectators. Most of them have less than 70,000 seats, while eight can have between 70,000 and 80,000 and five 80,000 seats or more. Unlike college football stadiums, the largest of which regularly seats more than 100,000 spectators, no stadium in the league currently has a seating capacity of more than 82,500 seats.
